This year National Befriending Week is being celebrated 1st – 7th November. We firstly want to say a huge, huge thank you to all of our volunteer befrienders for the time they dedicate to helping combat loneliness and isolation in the community.
It’s a very saddening fact that many older people find themselves feeling alone, lonely and isolated. This could be for many reasons, such as they do not have any family, they have outlived their friends, their family live far away or perhaps they have limited mobility and can’t get out and about without help. Whatever the circumstances, it is upsetting to think of people who live in our community being lonely and not feeling like they have a friend.
Cyril Flint Befrienders was established in 2012 after Cyril mentioned to his Care Worker that he was going to be spending his 23rd Christmas alone. An ad was put in the paper about this and evoked a wave of compassion throughout the local community; so many people were interested in helping that an informal befriending service was formed, which later became a registered charity. Our aim is to help combat loneliness and isolation in the community through befriending. We match lonely older people up with volunteers who live or work nearby and who can spare an hour a week to visit them for a cup of tea and a chat!
In 2016 so far, Cyril Flint Befrienders has befriended 111 older people in Greater Manchester, that’s 111 hours a week that our volunteers are giving to help combat loneliness and the physical and mental impact it can have on people. We cannot thank our volunteers enough, for their dedication and commitment in maintaining a friendship with their befriendee and often going above and beyond to have a positive impact on their befriendee’s lives. Through just one hour a week befrienders can fill a huge gap in a lonely older person’s life; giving them someone new to talk to; giving them something to look forward to each week and most importantly being a friend and letting them know they are not alone.
